Summer Camp Counselor/Assistant

Summary:
Camp counselors and assistants work together as a team to create a connection between campers and animals that will impact the campers desire to care for the natural world. Counselors lead lessons and activities both indoors and outdoors while monitoring camper safety and participation. Counselors and assistants are responsible for creating an exciting and welcoming environment through their enthusiastic pursuit of accomplishing camp goals and inspiring campers in the natural world. Only qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview in February. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Supervises the safety of campers
• Collaborate on lesson preparation as directed by the curriculum and engage in educational discussions throughout camp
• Responsible for camp group during the day, participates in all activities and monitors camper participation and enjoyment
• Must work with other counselors and assistants as a team
• Respectful of camp schedule and is prompt and on time to activities
• Assist with camp drop off and pick up

Qualifications:
• Counselor must be at least 18 years of age and assistant must be at least 16 years of age
• Must commit to working at least 7 weeks between the dates of June 3 - Aug 9 (excluding the week of July 1)
• Able to attend required staff training on May 29 and May 30
• Enjoys working with children
• Comfortable speaking in front of groups
• Demonstrates enthusiasm for goals and mission of Zoo Camp
• Strong leadership and collaborative skills
• Able to work independently and on a team
• Organizational and multi-tasking skills
• Customer service skills

Education and Experience:
• High school or higher
• Pursuing or has a bachelor’s degree in education or science related field is preferred
• Experience teaching in a formal or informal setting preferred
• Experience working with children ages 4-10 years

Physical Demands:
Counselor and assistant will be outside, leading and participating in a variety of physical activities with campers. Counselor and assistant should be able to tolerate the heat for long periods of time, and able to walk throughout the Zoo multiple times a day
